Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis Treatment in Nagpur

Adenomyosis is a condition where tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrial tissue) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium), causing symptoms like heavy, painful periods and potentially infertility.

What is Adenomyosis?

1. Ectopic Endometrial Tissue: Adenomyosis occurs when endometrial tissue, which typically lines the uterus, grows into the muscular walls of the uterus.
2. Enlarged Uterus: The presence of this tissue within the uterine wall can cause the uterus to enlarge.
3. Menstrual Symptoms: The displaced tissue continues to behave like normal endometrial tissue, thickening, breaking down, and bleeding during each menstrual cycle, leading to heavy and painful periods.
4. Common in Women Over 30: Adenomyosis is more commonly diagnosed in women over the age of 30.
5. Not the Same as Endometriosis: While both adenomyosis and endometriosis involve endometrial tissue, endometriosis occurs outside the uterus, while adenomyosis is within the uterine wall.

Symptoms of Adenomyosis:

1. Heavy and Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding: This is a common symptom, sometimes with blood clots.
2. Painful Menstrual Periods: Cramps can be severe and debilitating.
3. Pain During Sexual Intercourse: Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse) can occur.
4. Infertility: Adenomyosis can sometimes make it difficult to conceive.
5. Other Symptoms: Some women may experience abdominal pressure, bloating, or pain in the pelvic area.

Diagnosis of Adenomyosis:

1. Pelvic Exam: A doctor may find a soft and slightly enlarged uterus during a pelvic exam.
2. Imaging Tests: Ultrasound or MRI can help visualize the uterus and identify adenomyosis.
3. Histological Diagnosis: Historically, a definitive diagnosis required a biopsy or hysterectomy.

Treatment of Adenomyosis:

1. Hormonal Therapies: Medications can help reduce heavy bleeding and pain.
2. Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System: This type of IUD can help suppress menstrual bleeding.
3. Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus is a definitive treatment option, especially for women who no longer desire to have children.
4. Other Treatments: Uterine artery embolization and other minimally invasive therapies are also options for symptom management.
